Education: Required for Survival

- FLORENCE C. BONIFACIO The author is Teacher II at Castuli Elementary School, Macabebe West District

I think most people would not be able to have a normal and prosperous life without education. Education plays a critical role in our lives. We must dedicate most of our time to it in order to have a stable and a better future. Education not only comes from the books and schoolteachers. More importantly, it is the knowledge you gain from experience and socialization. Personally, I consider education to be the set of knowledge and skills required to survive in life.

School plays the crucial role in education. It provides the most essential knowledge and skills elements. It does not only teach you basic things such as arithmetic, sciences, history and other subjects, but it also prepares you to enter the more challenging life. This is where you get to know more people; and by socializing with other students you get more life experience and knowledge of what actually is going on around. Far too many young people are struggling through school without having mastered the most essential and basic skills social relationships because they tend to not mind taking things step by step. We have to break this chain of thought that schooling is simple knowing the ABCs, counting 123s and reading. It is more than that. Being learned means coping with the situation, adapting to the environment, utilizing the skills, using the lessons learned, and even sharing what have been taught to them. Students must embrace the reality that they are not just meant to sit in class and listen as teachers discuss the lessons – they must also actively participate in the sharing of discoveries and thoughts. Education will not be able to advance if students don’t go through each step in to achieve a successful academic life.

Your family and friends also play a significant role in your education. As education is not just about acquiring knowledge of school subjects, they too will provide you the information and skills required for efficient life management. Your mother will make the best teacher when it comes to budgeting your baon, your father for distributing enough time for daily activities, your siblings for the extra set of skills in making things easier – name it. You can get free lessons from everyone you meet, wherever you meet them. Have a group of friends that can positively teach you the ways of life. Surround yourself with people who will educate you, and equip you, to become the best version of yourself. After all, education doesn’t prepare the way for you. It prepares you for the way.
