‘Time to Change’ for Cacutud

- ELEN M. DECENA The author is Teacher III at Cacutud Elementary School

For four consecutive years now, the Department of Education continue to direct all public schools to set all clocks in their offices and classrooms to match the Philippine Standard Time (PST) established by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). The school time inside each public institution should be synchronized in hours, minutes and seconds based on the standard time displayed in PAGASA’s website tagged as ‘Juan Time’. As sustained in the DepEd Order No.86, series of 2011, all schools nationwide are directed to set their events, meetings, activities and class schedules based on the PST and that all schedules must start on time and end on time.

The PAGASA is mandated by Section 6 of Batas Pambansa Blg.8 to be the country’s official time keeper. The PST is set using the DOST-PAGASA’s timing system consisting of a rubidium atomic clock, Global Positioning System receiver, time interval counter, distribution amplifier and a computer.

The working force of Cacutud Elementary School is united in sustaining the government’s project. We finally realized that it’s time to change our attitude towards time. Standardized time is now set for radios and televisions for us to follow and for those who will not take heed will be penalized. The synchronized time will somewhat lessen our habit of being late for we cannot make any excuses that we are late because we have different sets of time.

Through this manner, we, teachers and students are now taking the first step to show others that we are serious and being responsible especially in following time. For indeed time is gold.
