Math Helps People
RICHARD L. GALAG Darwin wrote the following in his autobiography: “During the three years which I spent at Cambridge my time was wasted, as far as academic studies were concerned ... I attempted mathematics, and even went during the summer of 1828 with a private tutor ... but I got on very slowly. The work was repugnant to me, chiefly from my not being able to see any meaning in the early steps in algebra. This impatience was very foolish, and in after years I have deeply regretted that I did not proceed far enough at least to understand something of the great leading principles of mathematics, for men thus endowed seem to have an extra sense.”
I definitely agree, as Math helps people learn how to solve hard challenges in lives. Whenever we buy things, we always count our budgets to make sure that our money won’t get short. Also, Math help us learn to recognize mistakes in thinking and errors in arguments— it helps recognize when people are trying to cheat you. Reason why companies hired book keepers and certified accountant. Math also helps handle data when doing Research Studies in solving problems, wherein a statistician would help the researcher after gathering data to create conclusions and recommendations out of the statistics result.
It only means that life always involve counting, we even count how many times we are eating a day, right? Math is really about creative problem solving and theory building — to be sure, these are very useful general skills for anyone to have. However, no skills can be gained without work and practice. Therefore, we teachers should be a good example Mathematicians in order to produce many students mathematician expert. The problem is that math education seems to be a very difficult to some students. Wherein in logically we should value math most because this is where we produce Engineers, Computer Programmers and so on. Hopefully this can change... --oOo— The author s Master Teacher II at San Roque National High School, Division of Tarlac
