WHAT IS IT TO BE A TEACHER?

-

LUNISITA G. ROMUAR

In our practical world, a teacher is someone who finished a bachelor in education, took up some methods and strategies of teaching and passed the licensure exam for teachers.

A teacher uses a book in teaching the lessons which the students need to learn each day. He has to present it in a very creative way so that every detail would be perceived.

But, going back to the olden times when schools were not yet established, when everything was just learned through observation, when all was handed down through stories only, still, people learned so well. They were more than the experts. They had what they call values.

The children learn through their parents or from the old people around. They acquire the skills and craftsmanship adored by many.

Though life was so simple, people value each other. They had a great respect to the teachers, for they are like second parents to their children. The students were so obedient to what the teacher assigned to them as something to do for the development of their learning.

Therefore, what is it to be a teacher? Does it require to be a professional so as to be called a teacher? No, a teacher is someone by whom people learn from what he does. He is someone whom others can imitate because of his good attitude and his way to handle things in life.

At the end of everything, it’s not the English or Math or Science by which people would remember and eventually learn, it’s the good examples that will mark to their hearts and that is what we call Wisdom – a great teacher’s lesson to leave with his students.
