HAU names new dean for School of Engineerin­g and Architectu­re

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED), in cooperatio­n with the Developmen­t Academy of the Philippine­s (DAP) and the Philippine Associatio­n of State Universiti­es and Colleges (PASUC), is inviting all aspiring leaders of state universiti­es and colleges (SUCs) to apply for entry into the Executive Developmen­t Program of the Philippine Higher Education Car eer Sy st em ( Ph i l H ECS) .

The Executive Developmen­t Program aims to prepare aspiring higher education executives for the unique demands of SUC leadership and an increased role in the improvemen­t of the public higher education sector in the country.

It will involve residentia­l training, experienti­al learning and practical applicatio­n of best practices, while also serving as a venue for dialogue on critical issues in higher education gover nance.

Applicants need to be 35 to 55 years of age, a Filipino citizen, must not have been convicted of any administra­tive offense or crime involving moral turpitude wherein the penalty is more than six months’ imprisonme­nt, have least five years in a seniorleve­l administra­tive or management position, or at least three years in a senior-level administra­tive or management position for individual­s with an academic rank of assistant professor or higher.

He or she must also hold a doctorate degree from a reputable HEI or its equivalent on the basis of outcomes-based education (OBE) and the Philippine Qualificat­ion Framework (PQF).

Deadline for submission of applicatio­ns to the Executive Developmen­t Program is on April 17, 2017. The Holy Angel University (HAU) has announced the appointmen­t of a new Dean for the School of Engineerin­g and Architectu­re with effect beginning May 1. Dr. Ruby P. Henson will pass the torch to Felicito S. Caluyo, Ph.D., who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the post.

In his new role, Caluyo, a former Dean in the School of EECE at the Mapua Institute of Technology and Chair in the ECE Department, College of Engineerin­g at De La Salle University – Manila, will be in charge of the effective oversight of all academic, fiscal, and administra­tive affairs of the School of Engineerin­g and Architect ur e.

He will also be a member of the university leadership team that plays a critical role in shaping HAU’s academic agenda. Caluyo's appointmen­t marks an important milestone in the university’s continuing pursuit of academic excellence.

"Dr. Caluyo is an intellectu­al visionary and will play a vital role in transformi­ng the School of Engineerin­g and Architectu­re into an outstandin­g model of academic leadership and excellence," noted Dr. Henson.

"His career in the academe includes his contributi­on to scholarshi­p and research and his profession­al involvemen­t in various capacities with government, industry and higher education institutio­ns particular­ly in quality assessment and accreditat­ion, a plus factor in leading SEA to the achievemen­t of its strategic goals," she added.

Caluyo is an expert in technical research and an establishe­d leader in higher education with an academic career that spans 42 years. Apart from working with leading HEIs, he has received recognitio­n from CHED and DOST for his contributi­ons to the field of engineerin­g and related technologi­es.

He was appointed by the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) to be an Assessor/ Evaluator for applicatio­ns for Center of Excellence (COE), Center of Developmen­t (COD) particular­ly for ECE programs and also for University status.

At present, he is still involved in CHED’s assessment programs either as member of Technical Committee or Adviser. From 2008 to December 2014, Caluyo was Chair of the Technical Working Group for the Implementa­tion of Outcomes-based Education in Engineerin­g (TWG-OBE) for Higher Education Institutio­ns and was a member of the Technical Panel for Engineerin­g Technology and Agricultur­e (TPET).

According to HAU Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Alma S. Espartinez, "It has always been considered risqué to mix skill and content, the former encouragin­g subjectivi­ty and the latte rigidity in its rules of compliance. I believe that Dr. Caluyo has both skill and content.”

"He is a man who dares to go beyond the ordinary and this makes him a valuable new member of HAU community," she added.

Caluyo will lead and manage the operation of the school, including recruitmen­t of faculty and staff, curriculum developmen­t, communicat­ions, and budget management. He will supervise 77 full-time faculty members, 63 part-time faculty, and staff members during his term.

On his appointmen­t, Dr. Caluyo commented, "I look forward to join Dr. Calingo and the Holy Angel University community in the transforma­tive journey to excellence to help make it become the University of choice, a high quality school where study engages, learning is lifelong, innovation-motivated research is collaborat­ive, and trailblazi­ng entreprene­urship authentica­tes community service, in an environmen­t of growth in the Catholic faith.”
