At the onset of the revised basic education curriculum paved by the K-12 program, the Senior High School program is aligned with the integration of technical-vocational courses that students may choose to take for two years. This is based on their line of interest in the various areas of competencies that they are about to learn and eventually master.

This technical-vocational areas are designed to provide utmost development of the individual as a total person equipped with technical-vocational and academic competencies, proper work ethics and desirable values that will make the person economically-stable, responsible, law-abiding, productive and competitive in the world of work.

As a TVL teacher, it is our responsibility to utilize available resources and needed competencies to students to achieve the desirable goals of providing enough skills and experiences to them in the most efficient and effective ways. Students both female and male learn knowledge and skills from basic to advanced levels across a wide range of institutional and work settings and in diverse socio-economic contexts.

Students are exposed to different skills-related activities in the classroom where they can already apply topics and concepts that allow the students link the learned knowledge to current skills content to achieve great scope of learning. Technical and vocational education has the potential of improving the socio-economic sector of the country at large.

This prepares an individual for a job and trainings as well. It is a multifaceted one as it tends to focus around several careers which include auto repair, woodworking, carpentry, cookery, beauty care, and other fields.

Technical Vocational education for the 21st century learners help people in better performance of their jobs as they acquire a great learning experience. Working professionals get a chance to hone their skills while making money.

Due to the nature of the skills it imparts, a student doesn’t consider it a futility as compared to academic education. In addition, these are specialised areas and therefore they have more chances of learning new skills. It makes an individual a responsible and independent whereas those who study regular courses lack in this sphere.

Students tend to get interested to technical-vocational programs of activities and allow them to skilful on their chosen career in time. These programs allow direct application of acquired knowledge.

With the kinds of students we have today, this is an opportune time to aid students with relative courses of activities that may hone their creativity and productivity in the most effective ways. — oOo— The author is Master Teacher I at San Matias High School
