THE A-Z QUALITIES OF A TEACHER

-

The long running slogan campaign of Department of Education (DepEd) ‘Edukasyon ang Solusyon’ (Education is the Answer) underscores the value of education in fighting most of man’s struggles as poverty, unemployment and ignorance. This tagline has been a part of all DepEd buildings or schools nationwide.

As another Academic Year starts, another challenges and tasks are anticipated by the educators as us. More than these anticipations are the real recipients of this ‘Edukasyon ang Solusyon’nationwide aspiration-our students. As the ones providing education to these youth, we were once the recipients of this. We were once the privileged and once the advantaged. Subsequently, our Department of Education’s goal had been realized and will continue to be realized though us, educators with the aid of our administrators, parents, community members, local government units, and our government itself.

Our target then, is not just to deliver the lessons we scribbled in out lesson plans, but more so, to realize the deeper meaning of the word ‘deliver’ and that is to liberate our students from poverty, unemployment, and ignorance, or at least help them in the best way may we can to alleviate them from their plight. To note, a teacher is ought not just to teach the lesson but rather to teach the students, for the former is an easier task than the latter.

As such, upon understanding this, we will be one of the significant factors in the attainment of the vision of out Department of Education which states that “by 2030, DepEd is globally recognized for good governance and for developing functionality-literate and God-loving Filipinos”, and its mission “to provide quality basic education that is accessible to all and lays the foundation of lifelong learning and service for the common good”.

Thus, this is to say that ideally, education should be available to all, and considering this our government is doing everything to make sure that education is accessed by every Pilipino regardless of one’s social or economic status. Self-Determination is something educators should work on and should inculcate in the hearts and the minds of our youth. Self-determination is not an end of education but a means. This is to say that one should be determination is further strengthened by education. As a result, one can he freed from the pang of poverty, unemployment, and ignorance. An education, coupled by self-determination will result in alleviation.
