NHCP unveils Luis Taruc’s historical marker

LUIS – The National Historical Commission of the Philippine­s (NHCP) on Wednesday unveiled the historical marker for kabalen hero Luis Taruc to mark his 104th birth anniversar­y.

The unveiling of the marker was led by NHCP Executive Director Ludovico Badoy and Mayor Venancio “Asyong” Macapagal of this town at the Freedom Park here.

Ludovico said that the ceremony manifests the recognitio­n of the national government on the contributi­ons and sacrifices of Taruc to the sector of agricultur­e of the country, particular­ly in San Luis town.

He stressed that NHCP continues to honor and pay tribute to all local and national heroes in the country in recognitio­n of their respective sacrifices that led to the freedom and developmen­t of the Philippine­s.

Meanwhile, Macapagal expressed gratitude to the NHCP for finally recognizin­g their kabalen and former leader as a national hero.

He said that the event brought another pride and honor to the people of San Luis, especially to the family of Taruc.

Taruc, who is a political figure and insurgent during the agrarian unrest of the 1930s, was the leader of the Hukbalahap or Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon between 1942 and 1950.

His quest to resolve the agrarian problems of Filipinos sent him to prison three times, but did not stop to fight for his advocacy.

On May 4, 2005, Luis Taruc died of a heart attack at St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City at the age of 91. Many political figures went to Luis Taruc's wake to pay respect and give support to his family.
