EXPLICIT TEACHING IN CATERING LEARNERS DIVERSITY
In the completion of the K to 12 Stages in Elementary Level the rising of the different methods and strategies that come with the new curriculum. Methods and strategies in teaching are vital to the process of teaching and learning.
It is the teachers’responsibly to abreast themselves to the different teaching styles that will help them cater the diversity of the learners and leads to a successful instructional experience.
One of the objectives of the K to 12 mass training is to familiarize our teachers on the different methods and strategies that are essential in the success of the teaching and learning process. Explicit teaching was one of strategy introduced to our teachers during the mass training that will cater to multiple intelligences.
Explicit teaching involves guiding the learner’s attention toward a specific learning competency and objective in a highly structured environment. It is a strategy that is focused on producing specific learning outcomes. Lessons are introduced into small parts and taught individually. It involves explanation, demonstration and practice. Topics are taught in a logical order and directed by the teacher.
Generally, it is I do, We do and You do. It involves modeling skills and behaviors and modeling thinking. This suggests the teacher thinking out loud when working through problems and demonstrating processes for pupils.
The attention of learners is important since listening and observation are keys to success. Topics and objectives are clearly stated at the start of the lesson. Procedures and activities prepared promote the learners to engage actively in the entire lesson, thus making the difficult topics seem easy on the part of the learner.
It is once said that transfer of learning is effective if you involve your learners on the steps that lead to your objective. It provides activities that is not focus on one style of learner but rather supply different activities that will make all types of learner be involve in the teaching learning process. It not a lecture discussion set-up. It extends its strategies to role play, games, songs, slogans, posters, experiments and other activities that will touch the higher order thinking skills of our learners.
Explicit teaching complements our new curriculum which is spiral in progression. Teachers plan using explicit teaching to make clear connections to curriculum content. It focuses on the gradual and progressive steps that lead to learners’development and independent application of knowledge, understanding and skills.
