KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
RIZALDY L. SANTOS
According to Sharlyn Lauby, Knowledge, skills, and abilities (aka KSAs) are three different things. And it’s important to know the difference – even though the difference can be subtle.
Knowledge is the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject; Skills are the proficiencies needed to carry out one’s role as effectively as possible and will continue throughout your working life; Abilities are the qualities of being able to do something. An individual must have knowledge and skills to bring out his ability.
Beyond the credentials, employers are considering competent professionals. Competencies are combination of knowledge, skills and abilities. If professional wants to develop, it’s important to work out which area is lacking.
Knowledge can be developed thru reading and attending seminars, training and workshops. If skills are lacking then more practical training might be required, to provide the knowledge in a practical context.
Professionals should also work to hone their abilities in order to enhance their career, but some abilities are naturally improves thru repetition and experience.
Skills and knowledge are easier for an employer to influence, and for a professional to improve, but that you can’t develop skills without ability. — oOo—
