IMPLICATIONS OF KRASHEN’S HYPOTHESES AMONG THE TEACHERS OF THE SECOND LANGUAGE
KATHLENE KAYE C. ALVARADO
The main goal of education is to provide quality education to all kinds of learners. With this view point, various studies have tried to ease some anxieties which our students are experiencing when it comes to the teaching and learning process. One of the prominent people who has tried to recommend some remedies regarding the educative process is Krashen by initiating the importance of the Affective Filter Hypothesis along side with the comprehensible Input when it comes to dealing with our students.
As a teacher, considering Krashen’s theory allow us to reflect on how well we treat our students on a day to day basis. Knowing the nature of our students as well as their strengths and weaknesses enables us to teach them effectively using the appropriate strategies and methods.
In line with the theories mentioned, teachers should create an atmosphere wherein students feel appreciated and understood in order for them to feel free to share and give their reactions towards activities and concepts.
Moreover, activities which teachers need to prepare and provide should be in the level of interest of the students; it will be easier for them to cope and react if the scenarios presented are realistic and appropriate to their line of thoughts. Students who are exposed to their line of interest think faster and react positively to a given task.
Teaching a lesson in a balance way wherein you don’t need to sacrifice quantity over quality, rather have them both and fulfil your goal in the end. Students who are suffering from learning anxieties should be taught well by providing them a happy environment where constant reprimanding and corrections are invisible, rather provide them with an environment wherein patience and understanding is at hand. Use constructive criticisms rather than destructive ones. A learner who gains knowledge from enjoying will remember the experience and the lesson for a lifetime instead of those who learn by force and will only remembered the anxieties which they had rather than the lesson as well as the teacher.
