A TEACHER’S CREED
MARILYN C. GARCIA
The sticks of chalk that we always use in class ,The blackboard where we used to write, the struggle of lesson- planning on a record book and all the documents that we have to submit, the hassle of dealing with youngsters with the ruckus they make on the hours of class schedules. It was a skirmish that we have to face. It was a decision that we gladly accepted since day one. A dedication to teach the future waymakers of the country; that’s what fuels us.
But when I look around now, It’s different. The black boards that I was used to seeing was replaced by white ones. Lectures were substituted by digital documents. Lesson plans turned to downloaded modules and the students that were so excited learning degraded to angst teenagers who constantly stare down at their phones Welcome, to the 21st century…
It was an innovation indeed. Technology has made a giant leap through the years; from keypads to touchscreens. Computers became so handy to the point that you can use it in your lap. The lectures on the blackboard were replaced by projected presentations. Solving grades hasn’t been easier on a digital spreadsheet.
Despite the learning offered, it has drawbacks. Nowadays everyone wants everything Googled. Everyone wants everything instant. You can have a picture to print when back then you have to draw. Back then, the library was our Google. But now, that place became a dust collector. It was a sad sight to see. In the middle of all the convenience the 21st century offers comes with a sacrifice: The essence of education is compromised.
It is true that it’s hard to keep up with all the innovations. It might even be discouraging to keep teaching. But in all of the drastic changes happening around us, I implore you; don’t give up hope. Keep teaching the children of the future the knowledge collected from the past. And if ever you feel like giving up, remember these words:
”… When nobody stands, stand on your own… ”
This is why we teach…
Let the hardship come or the late night cram resume…
Us teachers will never be beat when it comes to grit…
