UA facilitates computer training for Yakap parents, parish leaders
The University of the Assumption Community Extension Office, along with the College of Computing Sciences and Information Technology, recently administered basic computer training for parents of YAKAP scholars and parish leaders. The event was held at the UA Computer Laboratory.
The participants were taught of the basics of Microsoft Office and other computer applications. Sessions were facilitated by College of Computing Sciences and Information Technology professors Maybell Panlaqui, Maribeth Rivera, Edwin Torres, and Maynard Galang.
According to the participants, the training is beneficial since it is an additional skill and learning for them which they can use. As to the parents, it gives them also the capacity to assist their children with their studies.
“By learning the uses of the computer, we could easily help our children in doing their homework and school projects,” said Jane Salazar, parent of a third grade Yakap scholar.
Salazar and Joanh Ifurong, another Yakap Scholar parent, said that aside from the trainings, the University helps them greatly by sending their children to school.
“The support that we receive from UA is incomparable. Our children are beneficiaries of Yakap scholarship and therefore receive quality education for free. It is indeed a great help considering our financial situation,” said Ifurong.
The parents are also given livelihood project trainings such as soapmaking, food and beverage business ideas among others. They are also regularly invited to seminars and recollections held at the University.
Yakap, which means “to embrace”, is a charitable service of UA which aims to provide formal early education to ‘poorest of the poor’ children whose families are incapable of sending them to school.
The fund-raising project called “Adopt-A- YakapScholar” is supported by various donors who help pay for the school fees of the students for one academic year.
The AUF College of Engineering and Architecture, in partnership with ESCA Knowledge Academy, is set to hold a seminar entitled “BIM 100: Digitizing the Built Environment” on April 6 to 7 at the St. John Paul Seminar Hall.
This CPD-accredited seminar will provide understanding and knowledge about digitizing the built environment, as well as the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Common Data Environment (CDE).
