THE QUALITIES OF A GOOD TEACHER IN THE EYES OF THE LEARNERS
What are the redeeming qualities of a teacher? I’m sure you can give multiple answers to this most-asked question. Anybody can give a nice description of a good teacher. Here’s what Google has to say about the qualities of a good teacher: Have an engaging Personality and Teaching Style
Have clear Objectives for Lessons
Have Effective Discipline Skills
Have good Classroom management skills
Have good Communication with parents
Have High Expectations
Have Knowledge of Subject
Have Passion for Children and Teaching
Have Strong Rapport for students
Have knowledge of standards and Curriculum
What if we ask the students about this question, how would they describe a good teacher? This idea of asking the students of what they think of the qualities of a good teacher piqued my curiosity. So I asked my teenage son and daughter to have an idea of what they think of this matter and here are their answers.
“Notable ones are being nice, sociable, approachable, knows how to balance the learning capabilities of their students, and more that are pleasing to have.
But have you ever thought about the ones despised by the class? One of their first impressions is being STRICT. Every teacher has their ways of being strict. But per chance, did you ever wonder WHY? Why teachers always correct the students, even if the casualty is just an accident. Why teachers always want everything to be as perfect and smooth as possible during school events or presentations?
Why teachers roam around the school grounds, looking intimidating while glaring at the students having their classes? Why teachers look at you like their eyes are going to pop out of their sockets at any given minute? Well there is a huge reason for these listed actions. Just try imagining a teacher that is not strict and doesn’t raise any objections in a pupil’s mistakes. Surely, the student will be very embarrassed and will be teased throughout the span of the class time. But If the teacher didn’t correct a student, his/her mistakes will be repeated until it’s confronted directly. Such mistakes can cause low or worse, barely satisfactory grades. The things that teachers can be very strict of can make a student’s life much easier.”
Upon reading their ideas of the qualities of a good teacher, I was pleasantly surprised because they admire a strict teacher. That they believe that because of the rules and regulations imposed by teachers to their students will make as well a good student. I was filled with joy knowing that my own children love to be disciplined and that they understand the importance of discipline and order in the classroom. I would like to believe that most of the students also agree that of these of qualities of a good teacher mentioned by son and daughter.
Every teacher has her own qualities. There are no standard qualities to be a called a good teacher. As long as the teacher loves what she is doing, care enough for her children , has a commanding presence and skillful and talented enough so as to be efficient and effective , she is one good teacher.
