THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA BY STUDENTS AFFECT THEIR SCHOOL PERFORMANCE

I have been in the field of teaching for about two decades already and I could say that our students now are entirely different from the students before especially when it comes to their learning styles. Studentsin today’s world, are very active and updated when it comes to the use of new technology or the use of social media in particular. That is why teachers, should not be left behind with the use of social media so that they will not be left behind by their students. No matter what it is, we as an educators we should keep ourselves abreast with the latest trends in education and think of the ways on how we can transfer to our students the knowledge that they ought to know. We should embrace the use of modern technologies in teaching. Sad to think that sometimes our students they know more than what we know. Let us not allow this to happen because our students will no longer listen to us. If they see for themselves that we could not provide the new learnings that they need and that we ought to give. As what the saying goes, “you cannot give of what you do not have”. Doing all the talking is not anymore effective even to our passive students. We should use technology in teaching in order to catch their attention. But it is not only enough that we use technology in teaching but we should use it so to help us achieve our goals and that is for our students to learn and make learning to have a great impact in their lives. The use of technology is both useful to us teachers and to our students. If we are equip with the use modern technology we can be of big help to our students who make use of technology almost everyday. We can explain to them the reason why we use technology in teaching and learning and the importance of knowing its limitations. We encourage our students to use technology to help them improve their activities. Therefore, technology should be used by students to show more of their creativity in presenting their activities. And that they will give them the opportunity to perform their task in a modern and meaningful way.
Parents should have a close monitoring of their children’s activities.
