INNOVATION IN PHILIPPINE EDUCATION

- ARMIE D. DAVID

As we move forward in life, we encounter a lot of changes along the way and we always wanted and wish for that change to be a good one. These changes create a great impact and leave a mark in our life so we absolutely desired for it to be a positive change. Innovation in education is definitely a part of that affirmative change. It inspires and challenge students to do more and it enrich learning. The educational system and process becomes more competent and up to date and it creates more learning opportunities. The Philippine educational system is one of the priorities of the national government. In fact, the most recent innovation that took place is the implementation of the new curriculum which is the K-12. As an educator, let as welcome it with arms wide open, embrace this new revolution in education and ask ourselves, what can we do to take part in this innovation?

The faculty is the teaching force that acts as the facilitator of the learning process, so it is very important that every teacher should be innovative in their own different ways. Learning is a continuous process and it never stop. Teachers can enroll to continuous education program/ Graduate studies, attend training and seminars to increase effectiveness and efficiency, to update and learn new things with regards to his/her profession. Peer teaching and mentoring among the faculty is also a good innovation because learning is at its best when it is shared. Attending meetings may be a very simple way but it still there is innovation on it for it can be used to assess what problems are being encountered, what experiments or changes are underway, what is being learned, and what kind of progress is being realized. The use of technology more specifically the laptop shows how innovative the teachers are nowadays. In the field of instruction, the teachers are using technology based instructional materials as part of their teaching like the computers, power point, lapel, speakers, DVD players, television and etc. We can also incorporate the use of social media in our instruction and through this we can get students interest and attention towards learning. In the part of the administration, we can be a part of innovation by creating a school that brings out the best in both the student and the teachers. The school based management is a specific example of innovation in the administration. It improves the administration of the school system by transferring the decision making and the responsibility to the principals, teachers, parents, some students and etc. Better monitoring and assessment of school issues, teacher performance and student learning are clearly observed. It also increases the motivation and morale of the administrators because they possess more independence to act and decide.

“Create a culture of innovation in the schools. Accept that there will be many successes and some failures, but those failures will drive even more success. “This statement is once said by Ryan Imbriale, a high school principal. And this simple statement merely implies that failure is part of innovation, perhaps the most important part! When we fail, and we learn something from it, innovation begins. The process of innovation starts from an idea, or maybe in a simple problem or from a goal and a vision. As it develops, change, challenges, collaboration of ideas, analysis and decision making take part and this create an end product which is innovation. Our country has faced a lot of failures but still we keep on trying to find new ways on how we can improve our educational system. All we need to do is to support it and help achieve its goal which is to be innovative and to globally competitive.
