DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION IN ARALING PANLIPUNAN

- JEAN B. BAUTISTA

Differentiated instruction defines as an instructional theory that allows teachers to face challenges in teaching pupils based on their learning styles, interests and abilities.

Teaching Araling Panlipunan is difficult. As a mentor , it is a challenge for me to think the best instructions to arouse the interest and encourage the pupils to focus during instruction. It is also my responsibility to make teaching – learning process a meaningful one. Pupils learn best when they work without assistance. Thus, using differentiated instruction will be a great help with the following factors: 1. Provide several learning options which help pupils in take in information, concepts and skills in the lesson. and 2. Provide appropriate challenges for all pupils including those who lag behind, those who are in the middle and those who are advanced.

Before using differentiated instruction in teaching Araling Panlipunan, consider the following:

Identify the level of performance pupils in the subject based on their previous grades and determine their learning style.

Walkthrough the AP competencies that could be adapted to differentiated instruction.

Develop a plan of instruction: access to necessary materials, where individuals or groups will work and how much time can be allotted to specific tasks.

Consider the strategies if it is based on Content, Process or Product.

As a result, all pupils in primary level passed the learning area based on their School Form 5. Based from the consolidated report in their periodic test, no reported pupils who didn’t meet expectations in Araling Panlipunan. We also met the 80% of proficiency level.

Teaching is very enjoyable and meaningful if we always consider the learning styles, interests and abilities of pupils… Differentiated Instruction is the answer
