LISTEN TO OUR STUDENTS

-

LESLIE R. MENDOZA

Everybody makes mistakes. Oftentimes, we feel bad when we don’t get things right. For our students, they feel bad when they get low scores on tests and low grades as a result.

We cannot get everything right all the time. It’s okay to make mistakes, because it is from them that we learn, and then, move on.

This should guide us educators in our instruction. Our students should know that they can make mistakes in our class, and that won’t be the end of the world. They can have another chance. Everybody does.

Let us leave a lasting impression on our students in terms of remaining an effective teacher.

As educators, we must make the learning interesting inside the classroom. It is also important to show how much we care about our students – in and out of school.

It would do well for us to really listen to what our students have to say – even if they ramble on about their life at home, their lovelife, or even how bad they do at school. We should not make them feel that they do not belong. The simple act of listening does wonders. We can boost their confidence in being able to handle whatever comes their way.

Let us always be there for our students, through ups and downs. When a student approaches us, however busy we are, let’s pause and listen. If we really cannot talk to them at that moment, let’s set an appointment.

Let’s also pay attention to our students’lives outside of class – be it a sporting event or extra-curricular performances. Let’s inspire them enough so they would want to study even harder. In turn, our students would show appreciation for our skills as a teacher, and our enthusiasm help them.

Let’s also try to offer honest feedback, focusing on areas that they can improve on – but not too overwhelming.

We should strive to do our best to talk to and listen to our students, which is one of the most effective ways to promote growth and understanding.
