TEACHING AS A DAILY THERAPY
ROMEO C. GUEVARRA
There is something we can do versus the stressful and sometimes “unexpecting” every day grind of teaching: make it a daily therapy.
Yes, there is something relaxing-therapeutic even – about teaching. One way to do it, is to make learning symbiotic. That is, students learn from us and we teachers learn from them, even if they are young.
Surprisingly, children are blessedly patient. They stay put when teachers talk and talk about things new to them, but they listen when the discussion borders on stuff they love like cartoon characters or anime which a teacher can segue into an anecdote on pop interest or a video game they play at home.
On good days, the abundance of opinions and insights is perhaps the best perk of all. In this age of social media and technology, the generation that a lot of older people put down as disinterested actually still have a lot to say. Sadly, sometimes it is just that the students believe their answers are less brilliant when given in Filipino.
But actually, this gives the teacher the opportunity to venture on creative, therapeutic avenues like visualization or mind games that challenges everyone in the classroom. It becomes less stressful, more exciting and relaxing in a “listen to me, I’ll listen to you relationship.”
I consider it a privilege to learn from the students as much as they will learn from me, to teach them to give their opinion in the language with which they are most comfortable, relaxed and at ease.
