WONDERS OF READING
ERETHSAN C. BACARES
Read, read and read. Read three times a day it is as if a food that a child needs to nourish his cognitive ability. It is somewhat analogous to breakfast, lunch and dinner which was supposed to be done diligently by a learner. Educational institutions must foster love for reading and establish its essence to develop child’s literacy skills. The first phase of literacy is reading. When you can read, it is when you will be able to understand, speak, exchange ideas and learn more complex lessons.
The Department of Education initiates nationwide programs to advocate love for reading and continuously develop teacher-writers, illustrators and lay-out artists to create localized and contextualized books as additional instructional materials. The Curriculum and Instruction Division through its Learning Resources Management and Development System is responsible for the provision of accessible and quality learning, teaching and professional resources to improve classroom instruction. Online and offline access of learning resources most especially reading materials breaks the predicament in relation to the absence of school libraries among public schools in the country.
Reading books take us to unimaginable and wonderful world of learning and adventure. When we read books, we feel the characters’ emotions and become part of the story. Through books we can learn different perspectives and understand the aspects of life. As a person grows old and does not need to be in school, reading brings nostalgic memories and emotions on hunger for learning. We, teachers hope that this generation will appreciate the wonders of reading.
