Mayor urges Guaguaenos to join Earth Hour

GUAGUA— Mayor Dante Tor­res is­sued a mem­o­ran­dum over the week­end urg­ing all barangay of­fi­cials and busi­ness es­tab­lish­ments to join in this year’s com­mem­o­ra­tion of Earth Hour on March 30.

Earth Hour is a global event or­ga­nized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Na­ture, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Satur­day of March an­nu­ally, ask­ing house­holds and busi­nesses to turn off their nonessen­tial lights and other elec­tri­cal ap­pli­ances for one hour to raise aware­ness to­wards the need to take ac­tion on cli­mate change.

The mayor is urg­ing the switch off of nonessen­tial lights in­clud­ing street light and sig­nages, among others from 8:30 to 9:30 in the evening.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Syd­ney, Aus­tralia when 2.2 mil­lion in­di­vid­u­als and more than 2,000 busi­ness es­tab­lish­ments turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against cli­mate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had be­come a global sus­tain­abil­ity move­ment with more than 50 mil­lion peo­ple across 35 coun­tries par­tic­i­pat­ing.

From then on, Earth Hour has be­come a global move­ment with more than 50 mil­lion peo­ple in 35 coun­tries, in­clud­ing the Philip­pines, par­tic­i­pate.
