2 ISsupporters arrested in Cagayan
TWO suspected supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) were arrested in a raid conducted by joint elements of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Philippine Army in Baggao in Cagayan.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) reported that brothers Greg and Altero Cariaga were arrested on March 28, Thursday, in their residence in Barangay
Dabbac Grande for illegal
possession of firearms.
Recovered from Greg’s house were one caliber .38 revolver with six live ammunition, one 9mm pistol with seven pieces live ammunition, improvised explosive device, and an Isis flag.
Seized from Altero’s residence were one colt caliber .45 pistol with eight live ammunition, one caliber .38 revolver loaded with four ammunition, one improvised explosive device, and an Isis flag.
PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde said several subversive documents were also recovered by authorities.
He said the Cariaga brothers were members of Daesh-link group named Syuful Khilafa Fi Luzon or Northern Jihadist Group, a terrorist and radical Islamic propagation group established in Baggao, Cagayan in 2016.
He said Altero was among the leaders of the group, while Greg is a member.
Albayalde said it was the first time for police and military to arrest a suspected Isis supporter in Luzon, but he assured that there is nothing to worry about.
“Well, hindi naman (sila expanding in Luzon). Probably ito gusto lang magpakilala nitong grupo na ito, baka wala silang magawa gusto nila magpakilala, gusto nila makakuha ng tamang suporta probably by pledging support to the Isis,” he said.
(The group is not expanding in Luzon. Probably, they just want to be known and get support by pledging allegiance to the Isis.) (Third Anne PeraltaMalonzo/ SunStar Philippines)
