ARE TLE TEACHERS READY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY EDUCATION?
MA. DOLORES C. SIGUA
21st-century education requires students to master skills which are needed to become successful in today’s world. These skills are critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. It is now the job of the teacher to help the students master these skills so that they can practice them with utmost confidence.
Compared to others, TLE teachers have an edge when it comes to the lessons which will promote these skills. Their lessons have the right activities or performance-based task which will make the students be creative and critical thinkers. Also, these activities can make the students work in groups and do presentations to practice their collaboration and communication skills. However, no matter how good the lesson is or how good the activity is, it is still in the hands of the teacher to deliver the experience and guide the students. If the teacher doesn’t know how to deliver then everything – the lesson, the activity – will just be useless. Now is the time to reflect on our teachings. With this, there are several questions that we may want to consider.
Are the TLE teachers ready for this 21st-century education? Are they equipped with the necessary knowledge to lead and guide the students towards 21stcentury learning? Are they creative, critical thinkers, good communicators, and good collaborators to become effective teachers of these skills?
