IMPLEMENTATION OF THE K TO12 PROGRAM
CHESCA K. FLORES
Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Program (Kto12) is indeed a controversial topic, wherein there is an additional 2 years in High School named the Senior High School. Some would say that this is a burden on their part and others would say that they will benefit from it.
Millennials are very lucky to experience the freedom of choosing their career path that they want before college. They can really assess their selves of course with the guidance of the facilitator, if they really suit for that particular track or course. They can freely choose if they will go for Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences(HUMSS), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or General Academic Strand (GAS).
The advantages of Kto12 learners are that after Grade 12, if their parents cannot support them in college in terms of financial they can already apply for a decent and a good job. More so, they can already start their own business. They could also be recognized abroad because they completed 12 years of Basic Education. With that we can say that they will be locally and globally competent. On the other side, students who graduated in BEC and wasn’t able to pursue college and decided to work they will have a hard time to look for a well paid jobs. One of the reasons is that they are not in the legal age (18) or they still lack skills. And in abroad unlike those graduates in Kto12 can already work without studying for another 2 years, BEC graduates should study for another 2 years in abroad if they want to look for a job that is aligned with their profession.
The world is now demanding for more creative and imaginative people, that is why we really need to assess, explore on what they can really do and we should really make our teaching more realistic, experiential and practical. Teachers/ Facilitators and Administrators should be trained and to undergo lots of seminars to be equipped and be ready for the implementation of the Kto12 program.
