EDUCATION AND ITS VALUES
MARK C. BRIONES
“Education is believed to be the most powerful weapon to transform societies and change the world”.
Many affirm this view of the late African President, Nelson Mandela. Different societies comprise the world and each group is ruled by unique ideals, beliefs, principles and norms. In addition, still different groups of individuals with varied living conditions live within a certain society. With such realty, everyone must adhere with the norms and standards set by the world. In a world with set of standards and norms, it is just proper that each child be shaped and guided according to the norms and standards expected from him.
The school plays a vital role in educating and transforming every student to be better agents/ citizens who could help transform societies and the world. The Department of Education, together with the full force of the academe, has continuously made its moves in developing better curriculums for the Filipino students. All these actions and implementations are geared towards providing quality education for the students so as to prepare them to be better individuals and productive citizens of the country.
The value of education to the lives of all students cannot be undetermined. Aside from providing knowledge and concepts from the different disciplines, education also equips students with the right skills and values needed by all to live harmoniously with all the other members of the society.
Families also have high regards for the value of education in their families’lives. They believe that through education, their living condition will also improve since better and high paying jobs await college graduates and skilled students.
