TO PRONOUNCE OR NOT TO PRONOUNCE
DESIREE D. FRANCISCO
When it comes to pronouncing English words, “Basta antindyan me, pwedi na.” is the usual comment of non-native speakers. Though it is generally an acceptable opinion, it is however an unpardonable crime if the comment came from an expert in the English language who spent many years in knowing, embracing and absorbing it: the English teachers.
Pronunciation is the act or result of producing the sound of speech which includes articulation, stress and intonation. It is a very important component needed to achieve oral fluency. Unfortunately, this area is given the least attention even by many language experts.
Just like vocabulary expansion, grammar awareness and usage in writing and speaking, the skill in pronouncing words correctly is no less important since numerous benefits stem from it. When the speaker accurately pronounces words, he or she can get the message across the listener properly thereby achieving the purpose of communication. Misunderstandings can be avoided since both parties speak and understand the same language, thus, making the world a more peaceful place to live in.
Moreover, students who know how to pronounce words correctly can get good scores on English tests in which pronunciation is an important component. Having a good score boosts ones qualifications for college admission.
On top of all these reasons, those who are good in pronouncing words are likely to have better job opportunities in the future for they can confidently express themselves. Most of the companies prefer applicants with good oral communication skills more than listening and writing skills.
We cannot possibly know the pronunciation of all English words, but we can possibly learn them through downloadable applications such as MerriamWebster. Just type then enter the unfamiliar word and listen to how it is pronounced. This small effort on our part may create a big impact because teaching correct pronunciation is a way to empower our learners to be globally competitive.
