Imposing discipline to students
Elsie S. Roluna
ONE of the pressing problems of teachers is a classroom-full of unruly students. It would be a miracle if these obnoxious students don’t push their teachers to the brink of sanity.
Data provided by the Department of Education (DepEd) said that 2 of the 10 cases of violence among schools speaks about corporal punishment or the use of violence to discipline a child.
Department Order No. 40 Series of 2012 or the Child Protection Policy states that DepEd prohibits maltreatment, abuse, bullying and any form of violent discipline of teachers to their students.
According to experts, incorrect punishment of children may have a negative impact on them. It can also affect their brain development.
DepEd said parents should likewise implement positive discipline techniques. Meanwhile, every school shall maintain discipline inside the school campus as well as outside the school premises. The School Head shall have authority, accountability and responsibility for creating an environment within the school that is conducive to teaching and learning.
Teachers shall be deemed persons in authority when in the discharge of lawful duties and responsibilities, and shall, therefore, be accorded due respect and protection. Therefore, the school shall impose appropriate and reasonable disciplinary measures in case of offenses or infractions of good discipline.
The school, primarily, is a place for learning, gathering information and skills that are essential to a child’s integration to the adult world. It aims to develop moral character, personal discipline, civic conscience, vocational efficiency and to teach the duties of citizenship. The school as zone of peace (DepEd Order No. 44, s. 2005), provides the special environment for the formal, physical, mental, emotional and moral growth of the learners.
