Popcom-3 re-launches SK2 for 2020 World Population Day

-

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO---The Commission on Population and Development Region III (PopCom-3) joins the global community in the observance of the World Population Day (WPD) 2020 with the re-launch of “Selfie Kabataan, Sali na Kabayan” (SK2).

The campaign’s objective is to promote the World Population Day being celebrated all over the globe every 11th of July. According to PoPCom-3 OIC-Director Vicky De la Torre, the World Population Day in the Philippines was introduced to heighten the awareness of the Filipinos regarding issues directly and inderectly related to the rapid increase of population worldwide.

With this year’s theme “Putting the Brakes on Covid-19: How to Safeguard the Health and Rights of Women and Girls Now” PopCom-3 is re-launching its SK2 in hopes of catching the attention of the youth, considering the popularity of social media and the “selfie” phenomenon among adolescents.

Targeting the desired audience, De La Torre stated that the agency aims to stir the curiosity of young social media account users through enticing them to find out more about the world population day, the population issues directly affecting the youth specifically teenage girls, and the ways how the young people can help in nation building.

Currently, with the community quarantine in effect, sexual and reproductive health services are being sidelined, information dissemination on adolescent health and development are on halt and domestic violence is on the rise. The 2020 State of World Population Report recommends women and girls to be free from genderbased violence and other harmful practices even during pandemic.

The SK2 campaign mechanics are as follows:

a. Participants must be adolescent’s age 10-19 yrs old.

b. Participants should like the POPCOM Region III's Facebook Page (facebook.com/ POPCOM3) and register using the link https://bit.ly/ popcomr3 selfiekabataan 2020

c. Participants should take a “selfie” (a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam) and answer the WPD question found upon their registration

d. Participants should use the following hashtags in their post #WPD2020, # selfiekabataan2020, and # popcomregion3

e. Participants should post their entries using their personal FB accounts and tag Commission on Population and Development –Region III until July 10, 2020.

There will be 10 winners of 500 pesos each at the end of the campaign. Winners will be determined by the relevancy of their answers to the WPD question and the number of likes they got on their respective post. Announcement of winners will be on July 13, 2020 through the POPCOM Region III FB Page.

OIC De La Torre also said that one of the targets of the campaign is to make the hashtags trending on social media accounts by July 11, 2020. But beyond that, the campaign would also like to hear what the young people have to say on how they can protect themselves from violence and discrimination as well as how they can help raise awareness in the prevention of all forms of violence especially to young women/ girls.

Today, WPD is observed by the United Nations Population Fund, the lead UN agency whose goal is to deliver “a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled”.
