Why We Need Sports in School
Ricalito S. Payad
As I have discussed in my previous article, lessons in Sports make regular physical activities a part of students' daily lives.
Aside from its physical benefits, Sports also boost a student's self-esteem and selfconfidence.
Researches show that even the smallest gestures like a handshake from the coach, a pat on the back from their team mate, a high-five from an opponent or praise of words from parents and friends can boost a student's self esteem as a student. Through Sports, a student learns to accept constructive criticism and improve on his/her weaknesses until they succeed with their personal goals.
Aside from boosting a student's self-esteem, lessons in Sports also enhance his/ her leadership skills. Apart from being a team player, Sports activities also demand a student to be a leader sometimes. Knowing how to lead a team in the school will boost a student's leadership skills which enables them to be good decision makers. As a decision maker, it is also the team leader's responsibility to boost their team with a winning spirit.
When a student plays the role of being a Sports leader, he/she will undergo positive mentoring from their teachers and coaches. This positive mentoring can be an asset for a student's success, not only in the Sports field, but in his/her other endeavours in life, as well. A mentored student will learn how to manage his/her emotions well and perform better which helps them to develop a positive mindset early in their childhood. Respecting authorities’ decisions and accepting failures is crucial in Sports.
I will continue discussing the important points of having Sports in the curriculum in my upcoming articles.
