Home Science
Joanne T. Dimitui
Home economics is known by other countries as home science, household arts or practical science. During the old times, the subject area was limited to skills development such as cooking, sewing, house cleaning, and household economics. Eventually, it evolved into specialization in family relations, consumer education, parental education and institutional management. It puts emphasis on practical aspects instead of scientific and academic one.
Educational institutions envisioned to develop practical life skills among the learners. Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) is a subject area taught in the elementary level to introduce home economics concepts to young learners. It is made up of competencies that a child can learn to practically apply to daily life situations. Their own home can be an extension of their classroom. Learners become of help at home and it helps them to be trained of becoming more independent in the coming future.
These learnings are what we need to cultivate among our learners. Practical life skills are more needed now since learners have more time staying at home while being more productive. Doing household chores, taking care of younger siblings, caring of the elderly or the sick, washing and filing clothes, simple fixing of utensils, and keeping the house clean are some of the needed practical application of learning in this time of crisis. Parents appreciate their children more by being productive and of help to them in managing home and family needs.
