Learning at home
Maria Ida M. Espiritu
BECAUSE the coronavirus is still upon us, the Department of Education is promoting online learning, now that teachers and students can have access to more learning materials with the DepEd Commons and DepEd Learning Management System.
Parents have also joined the bandwagon, resorting to educating their children at home with whatever resources are available online.
The DepEd has released a Learning Management System (LMS) that can be used by teachers and parents who choose to adapt online classes. It gives access to create a “virtual class” where teachers can assign various activities and lessons to each learner.
They can also monitor a student's comprehension once all the assigned activities and grade submissions have been completed.
According to the DepEd, the LMS will work hand-in-hand with the DepEd Commons which happens to have Open Educational Resources (OERs), Electronic SelfLearning Modules (e-SLMs), and other multimedia lectures that can be used by teachers to assign and schedule each activity that a learner must go through in the LMS.
Teachers can have access to over 5,000 media galleries and thousands of modules for elementary and high school students with just one click, without compromising the quality of education.
At the moment, the DepEd Commons has about 8 million subscribers who have access to lessons, homework, quizzes. It is also accessible to parents.
Both the DepEd Commons and DepEd LMS are accessible in various platforms such as smartphones, desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.
To have access to the learning materials, teachers, learners, and parents must register through the following websites:
DepEd Commons: commons.deped.gov.ph
DepEd LMS: https://lrmds.deped.gov.ph/
