Performance-based activities in the new Philippine Education
Jake M. Rodriguez
Performance-based activities in the new Philippine Education Performance-based learning is a type of learning that happens when the students are given the chance to demonstrate how they learned by performing a given task. It requires a transfer of skill that serves as evidence that learning took place.
The education in the Philippine setting, particularly in junior high school, requires a student to take eight (8) different subjects per year, wherein each subject teacher is to incorporate performance-based activities in learning the subject. This makes performance-based learning an essential part of the teaching-learning process.
One of the subjects that frequently makes use of performance-based learning is MAPEH--- Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health. It is indeed a major part of any component as each requires a practical application which is the very heart of performance-based learning. It has been months since the spread of the COVID19 virus and since then, different platforms of learning were considered as part of the learning continuity plan of the Department of Education amidst the pandemic.
But in these trying times, how do MAPEH teachers effectively use performancebased activities via online classes? With the help of the department, a number of webinars and trainings were conducted to equip teachers with the necessary skills in online teaching.
They get to experience first-hand the challenges of teaching MAPEH online by doing a demonstration among their peers and co-teachers. After series of trainings, teachers find giving performance-based activities to the students by means of online teaching challenging more than ever as it requires extra planning and additional preparation not only on the activities alone but as well as using the platform itself.
