Motivation for a Better You

Kapamilya actress Angel Locsin raised about P11 million in donations from her recent "Unitent We Stand PH" drive that aimed to provide temporary shelters for medical frontliners in different hospitals in Metro Manila (Severo, 2020). In recent interview, the “Darna” superstar expressed her feelings by saying that she loves to help and she is happy in doing it.

Many of us keep wondering, why a simple person like Angel Locsin find happines in helping? And then we will realize that helping others is rewarding to her. Therefore, we can say that she is intrinsically motivated - her behavior is motivated by her internal desire to help.

Intrinsic motivation is an internal form of motivation. You strive towards a goal for personal satisfaction or accomplishment. You may even work towards a long-term reward such as the development of a business or participating in a competition, but the primary motivator is internal (Frank, 2020).

On the other hand, Frank (2020) explained that extrinsic motivation is an external form of motivation. As a parent, there are times that I employed external rewards to motivate my son to work hard to get good grades. Extrinsic rewards are often used to impact someone who shows little interest in a potentially useful activity.

Similar motivation occured during my post graduates days. Me and most of my colleagues in DepEd (non-teaching personnel) had enrolled in post graduate program to broaden our horizon and have greener pasture in the future. Therefore, seeking promotion and having better salary is a form of external motivation in entering the world of graduate program. Extrinsically motivated people performs to receive a reward afterwards, rather than enjoying solely the activities themselves.

Some of us are inspired to work or do certain things especially when we are appreciated, receive positive feedbacks and praises while others are after with receiving rewards like trophies, bonuses or promotion. But then, intrinsically or extrinsically, whatever kind of motivation pushes you to strive to be better and achieve your goals, keep going. Keep pushing until you reached your goal of being a better version of yourself.
