ONLINE EDUCATION
Rosemay C. Garcia
Covid-19 pandemic had challenge education not only for the Philippines but also for other countries. Classrooms/Schools were close and most classes were move to the online community. Although "161 countries have been affected in terms of schooling (worldbank,2020), there is no clear ways even for them to ensure the quality of education since students are facing various situation that could affect their learning. However, as the Department of Education see the need to use online education as a way to adapt with the current situation, the institution introduces the DepEd commons.
Yet, the effectivity of the platform is still unknown for it was not establish earlier as a means to reconnect with the students. In this light, various countries already have a better understanding of what it means to learn via online. As listed by Unesco(2016), USA is the best country when it comes to the utilization of online classes, 2nd is China and the 3rd one is South Korea. Hence, the Philippines may adapt ways on how these countries had made it possible to engage their students into the use of the technology. On the other hand, it should not also be forgotten that online education is already used by Higher Education in our country even before the Pandemic. Thus, the Department of Education may also coordinate with schools like UP Open University and learn their strategy. Another way is to observe as how Korean students were able to learn from Filipino teachers on the use of English just by having online short courses that runs from 1015mins. If the following strategies in using different online platforms could be utilized or be adapted from various countries and even institution, the quality of education will not suffer.
