‘Poor boy’from Lubao remembered

-

LUBAO— Mayor Esmeralda “Esmie” G. Pineda led the commemoration of the 110th birth anniversary of the late president Diosdado P. Macapagal on Monday at the Museum and Library of President Diosdado P. Macapagal in Barangay San Nicolas 1st, this town.

Pineda, along with National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Executive Director Restituto L. Aguilar, Municipal Vice Mayor Jay B. Montemayor, and Lubao Chief of Police Lt. Col. Michael Jhon N. Riego offered flowers at the monument of Macapagal, known as the “poor boy from Lubao”, who was elected as the country’s Vice President in 1957 and President in 1961.

The program was spearheaded by the NHCP in cooperation with the Municipal Government of Lubao.

Different from previous celebrations which had a memorial mass prior to the wreath-laying ceremony, this year’s commemmoration was kept short and simple to follow protocols concerning the ongoing pandemic.

Pineda said that the pandemic will not stop Lubeños from honoring Macapagal but stressed that strict protocols were observed. (Chris Navarro)

CLARK FREEPORT--The North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Corporation is hiring more than 1,500 technical and skilled workers to accelerate the construction of the eight-kilometer NLEX Connector.

NLEX President and General Manager J. Luigi Bautista said priority is being given to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have been displaced and unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Being a government partner in infrastructure building, NLEX Corporation and the entire Metro Pacific Tollways group are keen in helping the economy recover from the adverse effects of the pandemic. With our ongoing projects, we can create more opportunities for people thus propel growth in the country,” Bautista said.

Recognizing the ability of infrastructure projects to spur economic activities, the tollways company is also mobilizing more construction equipment to improve productivity at the site and speed up the construction of the NLEX Connector.

This all-vehicle class elevated expressway will traverse the Caloocan Interchange, 5th Avenue/ C3 Road in Caloocan City pass through España, and eventually link up with the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 at PUP Sta. Mesa in Manila.

“We are currently working on the first fivekilometer section of the NLEX Connector from Grace Park, Caloocan City to España St., Sampaloc, Manila. As projected, more than 1,500 workers are needed to accelerate the construction works,” Bautista said.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) advised companies involved in the government’s “Build, Build, Build” program to extend employment assistance to repatriated OFWs especially those who were previously employed in construction.

“We are looking at our massive infrastructure projects as key employment generators. Apart from building roads and bridges to spur economic development, this administration’s 'Build Build Build' program is also geared towards providing livelihood to fellow Filipinos,” DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said.

In his previous statement, Villar said that the yearly increase in infrastructure budget has generated 6.57 million jobs in four years. In 2016, 911,034 jobs were generated and this figure surged to 1,196,555 jobs in 2017; 1,714,905 in 2018; 1,226,023 in 2019; and an estimated 1,525,342 jobs will be generated from the 2020 budget.

Targeted for completion in 2021, the P23 billion NLEX Connector aims to significantly cut travel time from NLEX to South Luzon Expressway from two hours to about 20 minutes, and

Provide improved accessibility for cargo trucks bound for the Manila Ports (North and South Harbor) and the international airports such as NAIA and Clark.

It is also seen to benefit 35,000 motorists who will be spared from using Metro Manila’s congested city roads since they will traverse their routes mostly above the alignment of the Philippine National Railways.
