“Man is The Measure of All Things”
Estepilyn P. Garcia
A great philosopher once said that “To Know Thyself” is the highest level of reason a man could attain. This is true as a response to the very complicated world we live in that offers a lot of influencing choices especially to the youth nowadays. I believe that it is vital for all of us to have a clear identity of who we are, as a fundamental norm on how to respond appropriately in the demands of this fast changing world.
Different sectors in the society play the role of preparing young minds to be equipped, molded, get involved, and eventually lead individuals to the discovery of their true sense of existence and in the fulfillment of their purpose in life. Note that spirituality is indispensable. Having faith in a divine and transcending being is never too late or pointless (Titus 1:2). Building a relationship with God can help us realize who we really are and what we are in this world. Our true identity in Him (1 Peter 2:9) provides us a clear distinction from the rest who are either lost or wandering. Hence, “To Know Thyself” in God gives us the power to overcome the world including life’s daily challenges ( 1 John 5:4-5). The Word of Truth; the Bible, nourishes (1 Peter 2:2), equips (2 Timothy 3:17) and sanctifies us (John 17:17). It helps us navigate our way out of misleading concepts and superficial knowledge. Knowing our purpose and meaning in life can bring peace and enlightenment in life (Philippians 3:14). Only then can we have a sense of direction heading towards our destiny. For instance, a teacher like me can impart meaningful and life changing lessons only if I am truly changed and be the start of change. I can be the “measure of things” to my students by being their guide, inspiration and model inside and outside the classroom (1 Corinthians 11:1).
