Rethinking the New Normal in Education
Ariel T. Perez
Emerging discussions as regards with the education in the “new normal” in COVID-19 period could be revisited through the magnifying lens of curriculum studies. The curriculum should have elements that can reach the learners who are geographically far from schools. The elements of the curriculum are the goal, content, approach, and evaluation. Moreover, any curriculum development in any period and circumstances need to look at these four elements in order to enrich the delivery of education to the learners.
The responsive approach of the department in the “new normal” education during COVID-19 period in redirecting the mind-set of the community in regular schooling to the “new normal” set-up should be put into perspective, since this represents the glimpses of opportunities and challenges in the future of education in the country, as well as, in the world. The COVID-19 pandemic opens the door for rethinking the goals of education. One of which is to make the curriculum more relevant, appropriate, and responsive in times like this.
The Department of Education designed different learning modalities in order to deliver the best and most accessible quality education to the learners. These learning modalities serve as vessels of learning and for these to work, a strong linkage of teachers and parents should be observed.
Education is a fundamental right, yet in times of conflict and disaster, it is often significantly disrupted, denying many learners the opportunity to have quality and safe education. However, we need to push forward for us to have a visionary mind and accomplish our dreams.
