It is widely known that education prepares students for the future. In the 21st century, circumstances rapidly change, changing the way people work. As it is, adapting to these changes means acquiring the skills that comes with them. Soft skills are competencies that exist beyond the curriculum. These are communication skills, courtesy, responsibility, and collaboration.

Communication skills in the classroom can be honed through classroom discussions. Encourage students to speak out and share their thoughts. Communication is a two-way process, so they also have to learn when to listen to others. By having communication skills, students can express themselves and become better individuals.

Students need to constantly practice courtesy and responsibility in the classroom. Remind the students to be respectful and courteous to each other and to people they interact with on a daily basis. This helps in moulding a better behaviour inside and outside the school. Students should also take responsibility of their learning. Let them recognize the importance of properly managing their time doing the work expected of them.

Collaboration is a soft skill that students need to learn to apply. They need to be able to work with others and be flexible when the situation calls for it. The ability to form work relations effectively to achieve better results is a major skill that students will need in the future. By working cohesively with other people and developing synergy, the students are introduced to a support system they can rely on.

It is vital to a student’s success to also learn soft skills and incorporate them in their education. By expanding the world around them through these skills, students are presented with the opportunity to boost their confidence and build connections with others.
