ENHANCING THE MULTIPLICATION SKILLS OF GRADE THREE PUPILS USING EGG CARTON MATH, AN ARRAY AND NUMBERLINE MODEL

The study involved three homogenous groups of low performing grade lll pupils in Mahogany class enrolled at Balingcanaway Centro Elementary School, Tarlac City. Each group of pupils which comprises of 12 members each was exposed on their assigned teaching strategies namely: egg carton math, an array and numberline model in teaching the concept of multiplication as a repeated addition for a week during their one hour remedial class period.
The action research design was used in this study. It followed a characteristic cycle whereby initially an exploratory stance was adopted, where an understanding of the current problem was developed and plans were made for some form of an “interventionary” strategy. Then, the intervention is carried out (the action in Action Research) during which time, pertinent observations were collected in various forms.
The 4 F’s Test in Multiplication for Grade lll taken from DepED Division Project AN (All-Numerates) Test was utilized to determine the numeracy level of pupils before and after the teaching interventions.
Data were computed and analyzed using Percentages, Mean, T-test to determine the difference between means of correlated samples and, One-way Analysis of Variance to determine which among the three teaching interventions is effective in teaching the concept of multiplication as a repeated addition.
After the exposures in Egg Carton Math, an Array and Number Line Model, all three experimental groups gained substantial increase of knowledge as measured by the post test, thus establishing the fact three approaches in teaching the concept of multiplication as a repeated addition were effective for these groups of pupils.
Findings of the study revealed that all three teaching approaches namely: egg carton math, an array and number line model are equally effective in teaching the concepts of multiplication as a repeated addition.
