Modular Distance Learning: A Strategic Plan for the Continuity of Education
Marieanne L. David
As we face the “New Normal” trend in our education system, the Department of Education find ways to implement its vision, to continue education amidst the pandemic. We in our school, stand in this vision to serve our learners whole heartedly and to make sure that learning remains unhampered, so we take the challenge to implement the Modular Distance Learning approach. What is Modular Distance Learning? It features individualized instruction that allows learners to use Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) in print or in digital format. How does DepEd’s Modular learning work? Students will be provided with self-learning materials.
Here is the process:
•Production- Teachers were tasks to print copies of modules to learners under Modular printed. Budget for the production was upon the school, seeking help from the LGUs, parents, and stakeholders.
•Distribution- the SLMs will be distributed to parents before the opening of classes and every two weeks. Parents were instructed to follow health and safety protocols upon entering the school premises.
•Retrieval-Accomplished activity sheets will be retrieved by the teachers from parents or guardians.
•Assessment- Student’s learning progress will be assessed through Summative or Post-Assessment exercises.
Does Modular distance learning benefit the learner in the educative process? In my own point of view, I might say Yes, modular distance learning can benefit our learners like:
1.Flexible- students can set their own schedule in finishing the tasks in the module. 2.Student-centered- students have their own way of learning that would work for them. They can adhere to sense of responsibility.
3.Simplified- the contents of the module are easier to grasps. Lessons are based on (MELCs) Most Essential Learning Competencies wherein topics which are not so essential were merged or disregarded.
4.Cost-efficient- parents or guardians can save a lot of transportation allowance. The only expense is in the printing of modules which are shouldered by schools.
In this crucial times of trial and challenges, we in the education sector find ways to help our learners and make education continue by embracing the new normal trend in supplying knowledge to our learners. Our goal is to uplift education and that no child would be left behind despite the pandemic. It can be possible if we will be united as one and accept the challenges positively.
