NEDA cites importance of statistics, technology in bridging gaps
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) OIC-Regional Di r ect or Agustin Mendoza stressed the importance of statistics and advances in technology as key factors in bridging digital and economic gaps.
During the celebration of the 31st National Statistics Month (NSM), Mendoza said its annual observance is a good step towards promoting, enhancing, and instilling nationwide awareness and appreciation of the value of statistics while ensuring the support of public at large in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
“This celebration is relevant as digital technology continues to dramatically transform the way we interact, communicate, learn and work. During this state of public health emergency, digital technology proves itself as a critical element of the new normal environment for it allows individuals to fully function despite restrictions in mobility,” Mendoza said.
Moreover, the director said this enables governments, organization, firms and industries to deliver on their respective commitments and remain productive, innovative, and stay at low.
However, despite these benefits, Mendoza said there is still a challenge since not everyone can adapt to these rapid technological advancements and enjoy the benefits from a fast-expanding internet world.
“Differences in socio economic, geographic, and geopolitical conditions of individuals, households and communities bring about the digital divide and even distribution in the access to use of or impact of information and communications technologies,” he said.
He added that with the pandemic, the past few months have been tough for the vulnerable sectors of the society.
With this, he said that the Regional Development Council, as part of the regional recovery framework, centers on taking actions to the new normal and improve resiliency of areas affected in Central Luzon.
“This includes development of high-quality digital infrastructure to ensure that crucial statistics and quality of information will be made accessible and available to all,” Mendoza said.
In closing, the NEDA chief called on the public to support the government’s bid for the development of an effective statistical system that will enhance our model of governance and facilitate our pursuit of equitable growth and development for Central Luzon.
NSM is observed every October pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 series of 1990 of then President Corazon Aquino. (PIA 3)
