What is distance learning?

Distance learning is a method of teaching wherein the student and teacher are in different locations. There is minimal face-to-face interaction between teachers and students.

In distance learning, students may get their learning materials through the internet, e-mail, or snail mail. Assessments can be performed through assignments, written tests, portfolios, and tasks. If they need help, they can contact the teacher through snail mail, phone, instant messaging applications, or e-mail.

Distance learning is also called correspondence education. It is commonly used by non-traditional learners like those who are working full-time. Nowadays, distance learning is becoming more popular and available.

Distance learning is also called a self-study course. Teachers will send the materials to the students through mail or online. The students need to finish the tasks according to schedule. Though the teacher and students use the internet to send and receive materials and assignments, they do not use the internet to have online forums and lectures.

What is the difference between distance learning and online learning?

Online learning on the other hand uses more of the internet. The teachers in online learning courses use the internet to give lectures and perform assessments. Online classes are scheduled so that the students can attend the virtual lessons simultaneously. The students can also give answers and ask questions in real-time.

In 2011, the Department of Education created two distance learning programs: the Open High School Program and the Internet-based education program. These were created to help high school students to study at their own time without attending classes at school.

The internet-based education program uses more of the internet and interactions are done online. While the Open High School Program is done in a traditional distance learning set-up.
