Lesson Planning in the New Normal

Lesson planning is part of our profession. Teaching does not happen instantly. It takes process and thorough planning. In this time of pandemic, lesson planning becomes more challenging as we are venturing to “new normal” classes.

The Weekly Home Learning Plan (WHLP) as prescribed in the DepEd Order No. 42, s.2016 titled “Policy Guidelines on Daily Lesson Preparation for the K to 12 Basic Education Program” shall be prepared by teachers for the learners and learning facilitator or household partner. The WHLP serves as a guide for our learners on what they need to accomplish each week when they do independent study at home (DepEd, 2020). It outlines the learning tasks that learners need to do in order for them to attain the most essential learning competencies (MELCs). The WHLP also trains learners to take responsibility for their own learning as they follow the prescribed schedule in the plan. This is very essential in this time of new normal education since it helps teachers, learners, and parents to track the teaching-learning process. The key elements of the WHLP, namely, the learning area, learning tasks, learning competencies, and the mode of delivery are the ones we need to look for and check their alignment to one another.

All the elements are essential and must be taken into consideration to create learning opportunities for our learners and to help them achieve the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Without this lesson planning, new normal education will be in chaos.
