The Importance Of Teaching With Love

Donata L. Bolos

-

What’s the key element in being an effective teacher? I believe it all comes down to loving the profession and teaching, in particular.

To be effective in the deepest sense, one must love what he or she does. One can teach basic skills without love, but to truly make a difference in a student’s life, there needs to be love. Teaching is an art where we explore different ways of connecting to subject matter and to students and love brings patience and understanding, which are so important in teaching.

Furthermore, do we need to love kids? The answer, in my perspective, is the word “compassion”. Compassion allows us to see our students as individuals who are struggling and sometimes suffering. Compassion allows us to see ourselves in the student, even the student who we find is hard to relate to.

Now that we are in the midst of a pandemic, we must realize the importance of care, and if our students feel that we care for them, this can be a strong motivation for learning. By having concern, empathy, and appreciation for our learners, we inspire and fuel them to stay the course.

When a teacher’s passion for their profession fades, should he or she pursue other career or still fight for their calling as educators? It’s a difficult choice, but as for me, I must say that there are other ways to rekindle or ignite the passion and look at the bigger picture: That you can change a person’s life entirely by being a teacher, the most noble profession of all.

To conclude, as our country’s educational sector try its hardest to rise above the challenges brought by the current COVID-19 pandemic, we must work hand in hand with our government, school, the parents, and the community to provide our students access to learning. We must do it all with love. After all, love conquers all.
