Mayor assures safety, security of Fernandino senior citizens

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO---The welfare of the elderly in this capital city has been among the top priorities of the current administra­tion, with the city government here making sure that they are well taken care of.

Mayor Edwin Santiago citizens in San Fernando, has always recognized often telling younger the valuable service and Fernandino­s that “kung contributi­ons of senior hindi dahil sa kanila at kung wala sila, wala rin tayo (If not for them, we will not be here).”

The city mayor reiterated the importance of taking care of the elderly, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic where their age group was considered as “vulner abl e.”

During the oath-taking of the newly-elected officers of the Federation of Senior Citizens on December 10, Santiago the local chief executive assured the elders of continuous protection and benefits, as well as inclusion in the city’s various socio-economic programs.

After the oath taking ceremony, Santiago awarded 25 kilograms of rice as assistance to the officers while ViceMayor Jimmy T. Lazatin and Councilor Cristina Lagman---who also pledged to give a cash donation to the senior citizens federation's fund--prepared gifts for the elderly.

Ruben S. Santos, newlyelect­ed president of the federation, thanked Santiago and city officials for their unwavering support and compassion to the elderly. He vowed to lead with perseveran­ce and vision to help the city, especially the youth.

The Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA), under Community Affairs Division

(CAD) and City Social Welfare and Developmen­t Office (CSWDO), takes care of senior citizens from the 35 barangays through various programs of the city government, including the monthly allowance, financial assistance to senior citizens’bereaved families under the revolving fund, medical assistance, and local social pension, among others.
