AWAKENING BASIC CONCEPTS IN PREPARING MODULE FOR THE STUDENTS
Noemi Charlyn C. Butiu
Haven’t you wonder why your parents or grandparents are good in history, literature, writing, and arithmetic? I often wonder why most of them can write good paragraphs and eloquent in using English language! If you ask them their educational background, some only finished elementary grade and others are grateful in reaching high school, but still they are exceptional in both academics and industrial skills. The most probable reason why they excel is because they have limited subjects and focus on basic concepts.
Learning is a step-by-step procedure. It must begin with basic concepts and basic procedures. In Mathematics, it starts with four basic arithmetic operations before a learner can answer complex mathematical problems. In my opinion, it’s about time to give focus on basic concepts where students can work unassisted if they fully understand the basics. Our present modality which is modular-based learning approach requires independent task among our learners. It is certain they faced difficulty in all subjects requiring a profound knowledge on the concept they are working with.
When the students were asked to answer an essay, it is by then we discover the weakness in writing. When the students were also asked to answer orally in Mathematics, or work on board independently, it is by then we discover that they lack knowledge on basic concepts. No matter how hard we tried to teach them the new lessons which are complex, still they cannot comprehend. A lot of teachers have the same sentiments when sharing their classroom experiences during classroom discussions.
A calling to teachers, please reconsider giving simple but important learning competencies where the students can accomplish their modules independently followed by average concepts and soon they themselves learn and discover procedures leading to answer complex questions.
