R-E-S-P-E-C-T IN THE WORKPLACE
Rosemary C. Garcia
Beyond salary and other professional benefits, respect in the workplace is one of the important factors contributing to the growth of every individual. Respect is indeed an important characteristic in the workplace. It is a gateway for everyone as team to work together to accomplish goals. This creates a harmonious ambiance where one respect a group, a colleague, a leader and a client. From there, respect is reciprocated, and goal is succeeded. How can we further define and develop our respect in our workplace?
Respect is merely feeling of extending someone well for his great contributions, values and traits, however, respect seems also an act of making your colleagues and others treated with appreciation and dignity. It should a label and standard regardless of personal feelings. In a workplace, the team leaders and the team players must show respect to each other and their colleagues. As a member / team player, you can show your respect to your coworkers and your leader by listening to their opinions, giving them attention they need, and speaking with gentleness and kindness. You might seek certain behaviors and skills you admire in your teammates and present your respect based on that. Team members may not significantly like or admire the attitude and behavior of their superior or coworkers, but it is necessary that they still need to show action that respects the workplace to achieve their goals and be professional. In understanding why respect is significant, it will start to grow on a greater meaning. One can understand why colleague react in certain ways and situations and make moves to create a more positive work
environment with everyone involved. When people feel respected, they give respect to others.
