THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING
Agnes A. Soriano
In a political perspective, education is being regarded as the country’s gateway towards prosperity. This is the main reason that our government spends a lot of money, time, effort and resources towards the education of the masses. An educated citizenry is more or less likely to influence the socio-economic and political structures of the society in particular and country in general.
People in general, always associate education and learning, for them these words are synonymous to each other. In order to have a deeper understanding of this matter, let us first differentiate the two.
Wikipedia defined Education as “the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.” W hile learning “the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences.” If we will put it into context, education is the process of how a person acquires learning. It is a scientific and systematic approach or procedure on the acquisition of learning. Nowadays, the Government focuses on the education aspect of the acquisition of learning rather than the learning itself. This is more evident in the habitual curriculum rearrangement by the Department of Education and other learning institutions.
If we want the economic prosperity and economic independence, we should have realigned our perspective and focus more on learning rather than education. The present educational system in our country is geared towards the collective social consciousness of the human capital rather than the individuality of the person. Yes, it gives economic richness that we want to achieve but it breads new social construct; economic slavery of the masses to the new colonial power – the multi-national corporations.
