Empowering parents under education in new normal

THE role of parents in their children’s learning today is not something to be ignored, because of the implementation of distance learning, according to the Department of Education.

This is why the DepEd underscored the need to help and assist parents in understanding various learning modalities, what with the changes happening in the country’s education system brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Children who currently study at home with the aid of various learning modalities need all the help they can get, especially from their parents and/or guardians, since teachers cannot be readily available.

In line with this, the agency has asked the assistance of the International Care Ministries (ICM) to assist parents of learners on better understanding the modules provided by the schools, and to help them adjust to the new normal in education.

Under the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed between the two parties, ICM highlighted its Two-Generation approach where adults are being taught primary lessons and skills in values, health, livelihood and parenthood while advocating nutrition, health and the education of children to benefit the two generations in having a better future.

The ICM said it wants to help parents be successful not only in ensuring that learning will continue through academics but also in essential attitudes towards education.

Volunteers have been trained by ICM to mentor parents in engaging with their children through fun educational activities. Meanwhile, kids are also equipped with essential skills to be ready for formal education and parents are empowered with the skills to strengthen positive engagement with their children.

The assistance provided by the group is highly appreciated because in this time of pandemic, parents who are able to provide, assist and facilitate learning at home have a better advantage of making learning happen.
