ELIMINATING CRAB MENTALITY

Ma. Cecilia M. Marin

-

When we talk of negative traits that can be associated to Filipinos, "Crab mentality" pops into the scene. It is a term that describes a way of thinking of a person who always tries to pull down other people, not wanting them to succeed while he or she is being left behind. The sad reality is, it is true indeed, and we are sometimes guilty of such mentality.

But it is never too late to change. There are several ways that could help us overcome crab mentality. The following are:

1. Acceptance

Learn to accept the fact that you are also guilty of crab mentality and that sometimes you tend to be jealous and pull others down. We can never overcome this mentality unless we admit to ourselves that we have it. Humility is the answer. We should be humble enough to admit our mistakes. This will definitely elevate us as human beings.

2. Be open minded.

One reason why we have negative perceptions on other people is simply because we do not know them personally. Before we get insecure or get jealous on others success, why don't you try to learn about how the person had gone through in order to achieve his success. You will be able to develop compassion with others if you know them more. As they say, knowing is the beginning of loving. Avoid giving quick judgments.

3. Choose to build rather than destroy

Helping others and uniting with them is one of the best ways to beat crab mentality. Choose to join force and cooperate with others to be able to achieve more. Opt to be like the ants that act as a team and survive as a team rather than the crabs that act selfishly competing with one another and pulling down each other that leads to their failure.

4. Positive mind setting

Since crab mentality is a state of mind, train yourself to entertain positive thoughts always and avoid being influenced or corrupted by jealousy, insecurity or bitterness. In other words, you have to be more mature, knowledgeable and understanding when it comes to dealing with people around you. Learn how to trust others and free yourself from doubts that later on lead to negativity.

5. Don't worry, be happy

Being cheerful always will invite positivity. Never spend your time worrying about others getting better while you are being left behind. Rather than being bitter, be happy for their success and seek inspiration from their success stories. Be happy with your life and be inspired to do better yourself. Life is too short to be wasted on being miserable.
